Showcase 2025 will celebrate the story of our wharenui Te Ihorangi and our marae Aratiatia, offering a moving reflection on their origins and enduring legacy. This narrative will be shared through the voices of those who helped bring the vision to life: master carver Kereti Rautangata, his beloved wife Whaea Maria, and Erana Coulter (née Ferris), the former Head of the Maaori Faculty and composer of the Fairfield College himene.
We will also highlight the experiences of Fairfield College students from the 1980s who were privileged to learn the art of whakairo under Kereti’s guidance. In addition, we hope to include reflections from former principal Mr Brian Prestige, whose steadfast support helped bring Erana’s vision to fruition.
This tribute aims to honour not only the cultural and historical significance of Te Ihorangi, but also the personal journeys and shared commitment of the many artisans and community members involved. Their memories, filled with aroha andpurpose, reflect the collective spirit that gave life to this whare. At the heart of Te Ihorangi lies a bold expression of diversity and inclusivity. Its whakairo acknowledge Māori atua alongside spiritual figures from other cultures and traditions. The kaupapa that shaped its creation was one of unity: a vision that all who enter—regardless of background—would feel the embrace of manaakitanga: love, hospitality, and respect.
As Te Ihorangi approaches its 30th anniversary, standing proudly on land formerly possessed by Ngaati Wairere, we are honoured to share its story with you—a story of vision, resilience, and belonging.
